Contemporary Tokyo Tokyo Space is pleased to announce the solo exhibition "I want love or death" by Johdai Watanabe  from 13 (Sat) to 27 (Sat) January.

Johdai Watanabe was born in Ehime in 1983. After working as a manga artist's assistant, he started drawing pictures of beautiful women based on Japanese manga techniques and concepts, and taking nature photographs.
The title of the exhibition was taken from a line in the film Matilda. It is one of the most iconic lines in the film, and I also wanted to express my feeling that I want art or death...". According to some articles, there are no particular artists in Japan who are doing simulationism head-on, and it is not difficult to imagine that simulationism is perceived negatively, given the Japanese culture and the Japanese temperament. I hope this exhibition will trigger some kind of discussion." (Artist's comment)
